Meeting New Friends and Neighbors

Updated: Sep 9

By Ralph Marguy, Amity Board of Education Candidate

I’m a proud member of the Orange community, and like many Orange residents, my wife and I chose to raise our family here because we saw something truly special – strong schools, deep roots and a community that shows up for each other.

We were drawn to Orange not only for its top-ranked schools, but for its agricultural history and shared values. We wanted to raise chickens, start an apiary, and be part of a town where neighbors look out for one another. This spring, our daughter graduated from Race Brook School, and our son is heading into second grade this fall. The support from the teachers and staff here has been extraordinary – thoughtful, proactive and rooted in care.

From the moment our children started at Mary L. Tracy, I’ve looked for ways to get involved – volunteering for “Art Goes to School,” reading during class, helping in the library and joining field days. These moments allowed me to create memories with my kids and get to know their peers. They also reminded me how powerful it is for students to feel supported by their whole community.

I’ve spent the last 24 years in fire service and currently work as a fire inspector at Yale University. My journey began as a volunteer firefighter, inspired by my grandfather, a 30-year New Haven Fire Department veteran. I’ve learned that service is about listening – really listening – and meeting people where they are. That approach has shaped how I lead and connect with others.

That same spirit of dedication, respect and care is what I hope to bring to the Amity Board of Education. Part of the reason that I’m running as a candidate for the Amity Board is that I also believe students’ voices matter. When students are part of the conversation, we create schools that challenge them academically while strengthening their sense of community and belonging.

I’m proud to run alongside Sean-Michael Green and Jennifer Jacquet, and I look forward to meeting many of you soon.
